You don’t have to be an all-star athlete to make your pregnancy healthier and more comfortable, but for that matter, a couch potato is totally out of the question! There is a fine balance and these articles can help get you up and out the door!

Staying limber and fit in pregnancy will go a long way in helping you get thru the birth process. In my Childbirth class, I would compare birth to running a marathon. Let’s face it, marathon runners prepare for months to a year in advance. They are physically, mentally and nutritionally prepared. They hire personal trainers, change their lifestyle, and change their diets…all for a 3 hour 26 minute run.

By no means am I discounting the strength and fortitude required to run a marathon, or the toll a marathon takes on the body .It requires an incredible devotion!

But, let’s face it … birthing a baby…THAT is more like a Triathlon! First stage, second stage third stage…Early labor, active labor and transition! First labors will average 18-24 hours compared to the 3 1/2 hour marathon!

To be able to meet the demands of birthing your baby, just like a marathon runner, you need to be mentally, physically and nutritionally prepared. So get started!

Here’s the great news…you don’t even have to join a gym to start getting physically fit for labor.

1. Put on your walking shoes grab a bottle of water and WALK! I am not talking about a stroll and this is no race, but take a 20-30 minute brisk walk twice a day. This will get your heart rate up and your blood circulating!

2. Do your Kegels! This exercise is designed to tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor. They’re simple…just pull your perineal muscles as if you are trying to stop urinating. You can do this all day long – sitting, standing, in a car, on a bus – you can Kegel anywhere! By Kegeling now, you will be aware of your pelvic muscles, so when your nurse talks about relaxing your pelvic muscles, you will be more in touch with relaxed vs. tense muscles. And the other great reason to do your Kegels is that you will have great muscle tone for your partner. …and less chance of urinating when you don’t mean to!

3. Rock your pelvis! Get on your hands and knees, let your head hang down while exhaling, and roll your back up to the ceiling. While inhaling, slowly lift your head and flatten your back until finally your neck and back are arched. Rocking your pelvis will help loosen your hips and back, and help position the baby for his or her upcoming journey.

4. Butterfly. Instead of sitting on the couch, spend your evenings on the floor. Sit Indian style with the soles of your feet touching one another. Press your knees up and down like a butterfly, stretching your inner thighs. Butterflies will make you more flexible when it comes time for the big push!

5. Always remember to drink your water!!! 8-10 eight ounce glasses of water a day!

BabyCenter Blogger Stacy-Ann Gooden – When I was pregnant with Princess, I had a checklist of items to bring with me to the hospital. However, packing a birthing gown was the last thing on my mind.

I remember being given a hospital gown at check in. “Put this on. It opens in the back,” the nurse said.

The material felt like paper. Once I put it on, all I felt was a cold breeze on my backside. This thing was so uncomfortable. Oh, did I mention that I was in labor for 16 hours?

I had made it home from work around midnight and four hours later my water broke. So, I was already operating on fumes.

Every time I had to get up to use the bathroom, my butt was exposed. Walking around with a fetal monitor and hospital pole made staying covered up quite challenging.

Rather than have a repeat experience this time around, I decided to look into bringing my own gown. I did an online search, and was excited to see other expectant moms trading in the traditional hospital gown for a more comfy and stylish one.

Cindy Lintel, founder and creator of BG Birthing Gown, has been on a mission to make the labor and delivery experience mommy friendly. “Women say modesty goes out the window. It’s because no one has taken the time to design something,” she said.

My name is Cindy Lintel. I have been a labor and delivery nurse for nearly 30 years (yikes!) and I know better than anyone that WOMEN SHOULD NOT WEAR A HOSPITAL ISSUED GOWN!

As you know, the hospital gown is neither mother nor baby friendly. When we admit women to the hospital for birth, we have them take off all of their clothes and place them in a “Personal Belongings” bag, and then hand them that old worn out gown. We magically transform a healthy laboring woman…into to a sick patient.

Despite all of her preparations: classes, doula and birth plan, etc.; she just became a patient. In the hospital gown, women are less inclined to be out of bed walking, rocking and swaying, for fear their rear will be exposed. Psychologically, many women will even BEHAVE sick because they are wearing “sick” clothing. The fabric is scratchy, it pulls at the neck and frankly, women just look plain old awful in that sack.

Though hospitals work hard to achieve their “Baby Friendly” designation just by outfitting the new mama in a hospital gown, it completely gets in the way of breast feeding. For my entire career of helping mothers nurse, I have had to fight with the hospital gown to keep it out of the way of feedings or try yanking at the powerful snaps at the shoulders without ripping the gown. But for me the saddest part is when a young woman sits there in bed trying desperately to get her baby to the breast, and she has both breasts exposed. Over and over again these gals say…”you know, modesty goes out the window when you have a baby.”

I just don’t believe it has to be so. I recently looked at MY birth photos…and there I was sitting up in bed bare chested with family all around…trying to feed my baby. How embarrassing!

So, after all of these years and 4,000+ babies later, I have created the BG Birthing Gown. A gown created to meet the medical needs of birth — lovely and soft so that the woman feels beautiful and confident enough to walk the halls during their labor — and a gown that promotes and helps a woman establish breast feeding with comfort and modesty.

I hope you will agree that women DESERVE to wear something appealing and functional to birth their babies.

Help us empower our moms by taking them out of that hospital gown and into the BG Birthing Gown.

CELEBRATE the Beauty of Birth!

Savings 4 Five Author Amanda – Giving birth to your child is on of the most beautiful things a woman can do. But I gotta tell you, you sure don’t feel beautiful doing it! Don’t get me wrong, after child birth I feel empowered and I am at the happiest points in my life right after childbirth. But my hair is a mess, I have tubes sticking out from everywhere, and I’m wearing that nasty birthing hospital gowns. You know the ones that show off your toosh to the world. As if your not already showing enough during childbirth.

Anything I can wear to make myself feel a little bit more beautiful, I’m all for! When I can across BG Birthing Gowns I was excited at the thought of wearing anything other then the hospital gowns. I’ve had had 3 kids, that is 3 times too many in those hospital gowns. BG birthing gowns are pretty in their own right. They aren’t too fancy but something I would wear every day, In fact I did! It was so comfortable I wore it for a week after I got home from the hospital.

“Are you ready for this?” This was Nicole’s pre-induced, and quite petrified question to fiancé Jionni on MTV’s “Snooki & JWoww”. The frantic father-to-be replied, “No, I’m not ready!” Well, he may not have been prepared for the birthing experience – but Nicole sure was! The nearly “MILF” (as Nicole revealed aspirations of being in an earlier episode) arrived at the hospital decked out and looking fabulous – of course.

“First thing I notice is how glamorized Nicole looks,” co-star Jenni divulges, amazed by her best friend. “She’s in a leopard gown, her hair and makeup’s done. I’m like, ‘What? Are you going out to dinner?’”

No, she wasn’t going out to dinner, but she certainly could in a get-up like that! Nicole wore a custom designed, leopard-print birthing gown courtesy of BG&Co., a design made specifically for soon-to-be mothers. She wore the gown for her entire stay at St. Barnabas Medical Center while resting up with baby Lorenzo – girl must have loved it!

Creator and nurse, Cindy Lintel, was struck with the idea when a woman in her birthing center asked if she had to wear “that!” She was referring to the old familiar Johnny coat. The woman was pleased to hear Ms. Lintel say that she could wear anything! And with that, the Birthing Gown was conceived.

BG&Co. would like to thank Nicole for so graciously embracing the BG Birthingown, and would also like to congratulate her and fiancé Jionni on their beautiful baby boy, Lorenzo!

Tuesday’s episode won’t be the last you’ll see of the BG Birthingown. Keep your eyes peeled for new colors and a brand new surprise addition to our design!

Bug Child — In the early days of my pregnancy, before I was really “out” to the public, I had to indulge my baby baby baby baby baby brain online…on forums, baby blogs and more.

It was on one of those websites (ahem: Celebrity Babies) that I first discovered that you don’t have to wear the hospital-issued gowns when you’re in labor and delivery. It was an a-ha moment — and once I wrapped my brain around the idea of spending the big day in something cute and comfortable, I became a girl obsessed.
